Solving the palm oil problem with fermentation

Shara Ticku is the founder of C16 Biosciences, a company which uses biotechnology to produce sustainable alternatives to palm oil. Microbiology is an effective solution to brew sustainable, conflict-free palm oil to reduce global CO2 emissions. C16 Bio uses microbes to produce an oil that looks and functions just like palm oil, but doesn’t destroy the planet.

Marta Hatzell

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR AT GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Making fertilizers sustainable

Marta Hatzell is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology.
Currently her research group focuses on exploring the sustainable catalysis and separations, with applications spanning from solar energy conversion to desalination. Dr. Hatzell was awarded the NSF Early CAREER award in 2019 for her work on distributed solar-fertilizers and the 2020 Sloan Research Fellowships award in Chemistry. Prior to starting at Georgia Tech in August of 2015, she was a Post-Doctoral researcher in the Department of Material Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign. During her post doc, she worked in the Braun Research group on research at the interface between colloid science and electrochemistry.

Bryony Worthington

MEMBER OF THE HOUSE OF LORDS OF THE UNITED KINGDOM

Decarbonising our future with scalable capture, storage and utilisation

Baroness Bryony Worthington is a Crossbench member of the House of Lords. Her career is focused on conservation, energy and climate change issues. She has worked at Friends of the Earth on their ‘Big Ask’ campaign. She launched Sandbag in 2008, an NGO that uses data insights to push for a swift transition to clean energy. Currently she is co-chairing the cross-party caucus Peers for the Planet and devising grant-making strategies for the Quadrature Climate Foundation where she works as Co-Director with Cressida Pollock.


Jan Wurzbacher

Jan Wurzbacher is a mechanical engineer by training, holding a PhD from the ETH Zurich. Jan is a winner of the ETH Medal and received several scholarships funded by the German National Academic Foundation or The Boston Consulting Group. During his PhD, Jan researched direct air capture technologies and founded Climeworks together with Christoph Gebald in 2009. With more than ten years of experience in CO2 capture from the air he is today the co-CEO of Climeworks.

 His current mission is to find ways to permanently and safely lock-up CO2 to stop climate change. In his career, he has led financial modeling on deal teams to deploy more than $125 million across 15 direct investments. Solar & wind project finance, sustainable agriculture, private lending to sustainable food companies, and investments in timberland, organic farmland and green real estate.

Benjamin Tincq

Maurizio Montalti

Maurizio Montalti is a designer, researcher, educator and entrepreneur, whose work investigates inclusive and regenerative opportunities for the establishment of symbiotic relations among the spheres of the living. He is one of the early pioneers committed to studying and developing wide-ranging mycelium-based technologies, while focusing on the creation of truly disruptive marketable products. He is co-Founder, Chairman, and R&D Director of Mogu, the innovation-lead and design-driven biotech company.

Sebastien Farnaud is an associate professor in Biomedical science at Coventry University. He is a Leader and Innovator in Science and a highly qualified biomed-scientist driven to realise benefits to human health for international development through research and application of proven technologies. Sebastien has a unique record of achievements in academia and in the growth/recognition status of a leading medical research charity in innovation through the establishment of a platform for a global community to encourage research and attract investments.

Jullie Grollier

RESEARCH DIRECTOR AT CNRS

Bio-inspired computers

Jullie Grollier is a CNRS researcher in the Joint Unit CNRS/Thales, France. Her PhD, under the supervision of Albert Fert, was dedicated to the study of a new spintronics phenomena : The spin transfer torque. Her current research interests include spintronics (dynamics of nanomagnets under the spin torque effect), and new devices for cognitive computation (in particular memristors). Julie has over 65 publications, and she has been awarded the “Jacques Herbrand” prize of the French Academy of Science, for her pioneering work on spin transfer and a prestigious European Research Council grant for her “NanoBrain” project on Memristive Artificial Synapses and their integration in Neural Networks.

Jens Klein, EX CEO of AMSilk and current CEO of Origin.bio, has created a company whose goal is to replace the current chemical manufacturing processes. They position themselves by producing sustainable ingredients for large companies in a defined range of verticals (food, agriculture, materials, health, beauty…). By using synthetic biology, Origin.bio is able to create a new generation of non-toxic, chemical free technologies.They tackle the industrial problem and use synthetic biology to create a nature-inspired and scalable solution.

Massimiliano Moruzzi is an internationally renowned innovator in both the construction and aerospace fields. Massimiliano recently co-founded Augmenta. Augmenta has developed a revolutionary form of generative design that combines AI and computational techniques to change the way we engineer solutions to complex problems. Massimiliano previously led research and development of substantial innovations in intelligent robotics and advanced materials.

Jurgi Camblong

Data-driven medicine: from dream to reality

Dr. Jurgi Camblong is a visionary entrepreneur who is pioneering the data-driven medicine movement around the world. He is a molecular biologist published in Cell, Science and Nature, with a PhD in life sciences from the University of Geneva. In 2011, he founded SOPHiA GENETICS with Dr. Pierre Hutter and Prof. Lars Steinmetz, and has successfully led the development of the company ever since.

Restoring movement after spinal cord injury: the promise of neurotechnology

Jocelyne Bloch is neurosurgeon and Professor of neurological medicine at the University Hospital Lausanne (CHUV) where she leads the functional neurosurgery unit. G. Courtine is Professor of neuroscience at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL). They cofounded .NeuroRestore, a center dedicated to the development of neurotherapies involving neurosurgical interventions. They are known worldwide for the conception of neuroprosthetic implants that restored walking in people with chronic paralysis. They also cofounded ONWARD medical; a startup that aims to translate their discoveries into medical products. ONWARD won the first edition of the Hello Tomorrow Challenge.

Tamar Makin

PROFESSOR IN COGNITICE NEUROSCIENCE AT UCL

Exploring the key drivers and limitations of brain reorganisation

Tamar Makin is a Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the University College London, UK and leader of the Plasticity Lab. Her main interest is in understanding how our body representation changes in the brain (brain plasticity). Her primary model for this work is studying individuals with hand loss. She is currently supported by the European Research Council (Starting Grant) and the Wellcome Trust (Senior Research Fellow).


Ana Maiques

CEO OF NEUROELECTRICS

Personalised brain therapy, a game changer for neuroscience

Ana Maiques is the CEO of neuroscience-based medical device company Neuroelectrics which produces devices designed to stimulate and treat the brain. These devices record brain activity and stimulate the brain by administering small currents, while brain models and algorithms enable treatments to be customized to the needs of individual patients. This brain reading and electro-stimulation headgear has been used to measure brain fatigue in NASA pilots and may have applications in the treatment of neurodegenerative  diseases.

Putting AI in the driver’s seat: A 360° view on the future of mobility

Carlo van de Weijer has broad experience in the automotive industry with executive positions at Siemens and TomTom, among others. He is currently director of the newly established Eindhoven Artificial Intelligence Systems Institute EAISI. He advises ministries and businesses around the world on the future of mobility and serves on the supervisory boards of several high-tech companies and start-ups.

Daniel Metzler

Daniel Metzler is Co-Founder and CEO of Isar Aerospace, a Munich based company developing orbital space launch vehicles that drastically lower costs for space access. Having brought on board former SpaceX executives and deeptech VCs as investors, Daniel, or the ‘Elon Musk of Munich’ as he has been named several times, aims to lower the barriers for commercial space access.

Tom Grundy is an Aerospace Engineer, Systems Engineer and business leader. He is  the Chief Executive Officer at Hybrid Air Vehicles Ltd. A company which offers customers new choices and help them to ‘Rethink the Skies’ – bringing a new approach to connecting unconnected places, viewing the world in a different way and solving problems from the air more sustainably.

Olivier Nosjean

Olivier Nosjean has been a drug discovery contributor for 20 years, focused on technology platforms and supporting therapeutic innovation with internal capabilities and worldwide partnerships. Olivier is currently leading a group at Servier responsible for Technology Innovation, PhD Students and Post-docs, Public-Private Consortiums, and the creation of a drug discovery incubator as part of the new R&D site of Servier under construction in Paris Saclay.

Simon Maechling is an innovative manager at Bayer Crop Science.
