Marta Hatzell

Making fertilizers sustainable

Marta Hatzell is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology.
Currently her research group focuses on exploring the sustainable catalysis and separations, with applications spanning from solar energy conversion to desalination. Dr. Hatzell was awarded the NSF Early CAREER award in 2019 for her work on distributed solar-fertilizers and the 2020 Sloan Research Fellowships award in Chemistry. Prior to starting at Georgia Tech in August of 2015, she was a Post-Doctoral researcher in the Department of Material Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign. During her post doc, she worked in the Braun Research group on research at the interface between colloid science and electrochemistry.

Jullie Grollier is a CNRS researcher in the Joint Unit CNRS/Thales, France. Her PhD, under the supervision of Albert Fert, was dedicated to the study of a new spintronics phenomena : The spin transfer torque. Her current research interests include spintronics (dynamics of nanomagnets under the spin torque effect), and new devices for cognitive computation (in particular memristors). Julie has over 65 publications, and she has been awarded the “Jacques Herbrand” prize of the French Academy of Science, for her pioneering work on spin transfer and a prestigious European Research Council grant for her “NanoBrain” project on Memristive Artificial Synapses and their integration in Neural Networks.

Denis Sverdlov is the founder and CEO of electric vehicle startup Arrival. Sverdlov founded Arrival in 2015, using capital from the sale of Russian phone mader Yota in 2012. Arrival makes lightweight, zero-emission vans at a competitive price to diesel and gasoline powered vehicles. He took Arrival public on the  Nasdaq, via a merger  with s SPAC, in March 2021. Eric Dalbiès joined Snecma (now Safran Aircraft Engines) in 1992 at its Space Engine division in Vernon. He held several posts in engineering and programs up to 2005, when he was appointed head of information technology at fellow Group company Turbomeca (now Safran Helicopter Engines).

In 2008, he was named deputy CEO and head of Safran’s improvement initiatives. In 2013, Eric Dalbiès became Safran Vice President, Strategy and in 2015 was also put in charge of the Group’s mergers & acquisitions strategy.  

From 2018 until this latest appointment, he was Executive Vice President of Safran Helicopter Engines, and also CEO of Safran Power Units.

G. Courtine is Professor of neuroscience at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL). 

They cofounded NeuroRestore, a center dedicated to the development of neurotherapies involving neurosurgical interventions. They are known worldwide for the conception of neuroprosthetic implants that restored walking in people with chronic paralysis. 

They also cofounded ONWARD medical; a startup that aims to translate their discoveries into medical products. ONWARD won the first edition of the Hello Tomorrow Challenges.

Dr. Novak is a serial entrepreneur, long-time pharmaceutical and biotechnology senior executive who co-founded CRISPR Therapeutics AG in late 2013. Tamar Makin is a Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the University College London, UK and leader of the Plasticity Lab. Her main interest is in understanding how our body representation changes in the brain (brain plasticity). Her primary model for this work is studying individuals with hand loss. She is currently supported by the European Research Council (Starting Grant) and the Wellcome Trust (Senior Research Fellow).

Personalised brain therapy, a game changer for neuroscience

Ana Maiques is the CEO of neuroscience-based medical device company Neuroelectrics which produces devices designed to stimulate and treat the brain. These devices record brain activity and stimulate the brain by administering small currents, while brain models and algorithms enable treatments to be customized to the needs of individual patients. This brain reading and electro-stimulation headgear has been used to measure brain fatigue in NASA pilots and may have applications in the treatment of neurodegenerative  diseases.

Aymerik Renard is a business development and venture capital veteran with over 20 years of partnership and investment experience related to information technology hardware, software, and services.

Several of his hardware, software and services portfolio companies IPO’ed on the Nasdaq and New York stock exchange, with others being acquired byMicrosoft, IBM, Cisco, SAP, Yahoo, Sun Microsystems, Cox Automotive, Keynote, Ericsson, Oracle, and Cable & Wireless.

Aymerik was most recently heading Western Digital’s investment activities across North America, Europe, and Asia, investing on behalf the CTO’s office as well as the WD, HGST, SanDisk, and G-Tech brands. Aymerik came to Western Digital via its acquisition of SanDisk, where he led the US venture activity.

Prior to joining BCG, Tawfik worked in consulting, investment banking, and tech in the US, Canada, and France.

Prior to joining Redstone VC, Stefano held various positions as data scientist and investor in sustainable finance. He also consulted public institutions on matters related to data, science and sustainability. Stefano holds a PhD in Financial Computing from University College London, is deeply passionate about complex systems and new investing models for science.

Prior to SOSV, Benjamin was the founder of a strategy consultancy which researched Asia-based digital innovations, with clients such as Microsoft, Citi and Harvard Business School. He also founded Mobile Monday Beijing, a community of thousands of mobile industry professionals in China.

Virgile has always been a tech enthusiast; prior to joining Mubadala Capital, he was an AI research engineer for a software company. She is currently developing AccelRare, an algorithmic platform for the accelaration of rare disease patient diagnosis.
In 2020,she designed & oversaw the creation of Future4care, a joinventure between Sanofi, Orange, Capgemini & Generali ; now, acting as Board Member. The initiative aims to be the biggest health accelerator in EU offering a strong support to startups for the devlopment of their solutions & their go to market.

Uzma joined the Ventures team in 2018.

Uzma is focused on assessing investment opportunities, conducting preliminary due diligence and executing deals.
