Richard Wilkinson

PROFESSOR EMERITUS OF SOCIAL EPIDEMIOLOGY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM

Researching the way inequalities and innovation are linked

Richard Wikinson is Professor Emeritus of Social Epidemiology at the University of Nottingham, Honorary Professor at University College London and Visiting Professor at the University of York. He has played a formative role in international research on the social determinants of health and on the societal effects of income inequality. He co-authored The Spirit Level and co-founded The Equality Trust. He has received many awards and given hundreds of conference addresses and media interviews.

Onno Faber

CEO OF RAREBASE

Unlocking research data for the treatment of rare diseases

Onno Faber started his first internet company in high school. He has started multiple projects and companies across different sectors, trying to solve the most pressing problems. Some years ago, he was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease that causes tumors to grow in his central nervous system. After that, he started RDMD, helping rare disease communities unlock important research data. He is currently working on a new project to accelerate the process of finding treatments for rare diseases.

Alok Jha

SCIENCE CORRESPONDENT AT THE ECONOMIST

Alok Jha is a science correspondent for The Economist, writing on everything from cosmology to particle physics and stem cells to climate change. Before that, he was a science correspondent for ITN and the Guardian. He has also written and presented TV and radio documentary series for the BBC. In 2018, he spent a year developing storytelling formats for complex topics. He has reported from all over the world, including live from Antarctica, and is also the author of three popular science books.

Martin Pfister

VENTURE CAPITAL INVESTOR AT HIGH-TECH GRÜNDERFONDS

Dr Martin Pfister studied biopharmacology at the University of Greifswald and New York University and completed his PhD on the subject of immunology at the University of Leipzig. The Senior Investment Manager is a technology expert in the biotech, medtech and healthcare sectors. Moreover, Dr Pfister has vast experience in the organisation, business development and financing of start-ups and is an expert in international market intelligence and marketing.

Celia Hart

PARTNER AT SUPERNOVA INVEST

Celia is Partner at Supernova Invest, where she is in charge of the Life Sciences sector and the Supernova 2 Fund. Before this, she held management and product development positions at Cambridge Antibody Technology, one of the most successful UK biotech companies. She was involved in the development of several therapeutic antibodies in collaboration with international biotechnology or pharmaceutical partners. Also, Celia sits on the board of companies including Algaia, Bioaxial and Diabeloopa.

Ulrich Betz

VICE PRESIDENT OF INNOVATION AT MERCK

Driving a more curious society through science.

Ulrich Betz, an accomplished R&D manager with >20 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and chemical industry, is the Vice President of Innovation at Merck. Prior to joining Merck, he worked for Bayer AG in various scientific managerial positions. Ulrich holds a PhD in functional genomics and immunology and he is a co-inventor of the marketed anti-viral drug Letermovir and Pritelivir. Over the years, Ulrich has won many awards, including innovation, international business, and Bio IT awards.

Ivan Rodriguez

GLOBAL OPEN INNOVATION DIRECTOR AT L'OREAL

After a PhD in organic chemistry targeting Pharmaceutical applications, Ivan RODRIGUEZ started his career at Cray Valley for the Coating Industry. In 2002, he joined L’Oréal Advanced Research as head of the Make-up Chemistry Group before becoming, in 2010, the Chemistry and Performance Material Department Director. In 2011, he became the Global Director of the International Innovative Raw Material Department to interact with our suppliers in a collaborative way. After 5 years, he took the responsibility of the Hair Care Development Labs for Cosmetic Active and the Professional Division (Kerastase, L’Oréal Professionnel and Vichy/Dercos). He was appointed as Global Open Innovation Director in February 2019.

Prineha Narang

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AT HARVARD

Driving innovation in electronics, energy, and space technologies by engineering materials atom-by-atom.

Prineha Narang is an Assistant Professor at Harvard University. Initially, she arrived at Harvard as a Ziff Environmental Fellow to explore the new field of excited state quantum materials. She was also a Research Scholar in Condensed Matter Theory at MIT, working on new theoretical methods to describe quantum interactions. Her work has been recognised by many scientific awards. Prineha designs materials at the smallest scale, using single atoms, to enable the leap to quantum technologies.

Elham Kashefi

RESEARCH DIRECTOR AT CNRS

Getting us ready for a quantum world by building quantum-secure encryption and the right infrastructures

Kashefi is the Research Director at CNRS and Professor of Quantum Computing at the University of Edinburgh. She has pioneered a trans-disciplinaly research environment investigating all aspects of quantum cloud computing and verification of quantum technology all the way to actual industrial applications. She is co-founder of VeriQLoud a french start up focusing on quantum network applications.

Jean-Louis Constanza

CBO & CO-FOUNDER OF WANDERCRAFT

Pioneering self-balanced walk exoskeletons

Jean-Louis Constanza is CBO and Co-Founder at Wandercraft, the pioneer of self-balanced walk exoskeletons. Wandercraft has developed the first hands-free, realistic walk exo. Its rehabilitation version is CE-marked and commercialised to European hospitals. Wandercraft is also developing an exo’s personal version, to help people with impaired mobility walk again. Previously, Jean-Louis worked in the digital area and is a keen digital activist, sometimes flirting with transhumanism.

Isabelle Loc

HEAD OF REAL ASSETS EMEA AT BNP PARIBAS

Bridging the gap between fundamental research, companies and the general public

Isabelle Loc joined BNP Paribas in 2010 in Equity and Commodity Derivatives. In 2013, she joined General Management as Secretary of the Group Executive Committee. After that, she was Managing Director covering French Strategic clients. Since October 2018, Isabelle has been the Head of Real Assets, overseeing advisory and financing activities in Transportation, Export Finance, Energy Resources and Infrastructure, and Real Estate. Isabelle holds a master’s in International Affairs from Columbia.

Sylvie Benzoni

DIRECTOR OF THE HENRI POINCARÉ INSTITUTE

Bridging the gap between fundamental research, companies and the general public

Sylvie Benzoni-Gavage is a mathematician who started her academic career as a CNRS researcher, and has held a professor position at Lyon 1 University since 2003. Her main research interests concern equations for fluids and waves. Currently director of the Institut Henri Poincaré, she is in charge of a great extension project, which will include a math museum involving augmented reality technology.


Carmel Majidi

PROFESSOR AT CARNEGIE MELLON

Replacing the bulky and rigid hardware in existing robots with soft, lightweight, and deformable technologies that match the functionality of natural biological tissue.

Carmel Majidi is the Clarence H. Adamson Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon. He leads the Soft Machines Lab, a research group dedicated to the creation of novel materials that enable innovative applications in soft robotics, wearable computing, and human machine interaction. He is also the co-founder of several lab spin-offs that are using soft robotic materials to address needs in healthcare, manufacturing, and personal electronics.

Henry Ajder

HEAD OF THREAT INTELLIGENCE AT DEEPTRACE

Henry Ajder is Head of Threat Intelligence at Deeptrace, a company developing deep learning technologies for detecting and monitoring deepfakes. He is the lead author of Deeptrace’s acclaimed State of Deepfakes 2019 report and writes Tracer, a weekly newsletter covering the latest developments with deepfakes, disinformation, and emerging cyberthreats.



Ralph Fritsche

SENIOR PROJECT MANAGER AT NASA

Developing sustainable and reliable fresh food systems in support of long duration space missions beyond low Earth orbit.

Ralph Fritsche, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Space Crop Production Project Manager, is leading the effort to develop sustainable and reliable fresh food systems in support of long duration space missions beyond low Earth orbit. Mr. Fritsche began his career with NASA in 1989 and has supported the US Manned Space Program in various engineering and operational roles. He is a recipient of the NASA Exceptional Service Medal and earned a dual BS degree in Physics and Space Science from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1979.

Shannon Nangle

RESEARCH SCIENTIST AT THE WYSS INSTITUTE, HARVARD

Harnessing the power of synbio to help solve the challenges of an extended human stay in space

Shannon’s work focuses on the metabolic engineering of microbes to produce sugar, biodegradable plastics, and fertilizers from CO2 and H2. On top of establishing a stealth startup, Shannon organizes an annual workshop to demonstrate the validity of biological technologies for space exploration . Her main ambition is to use synthetic biology to address the challenges of living off the land on Mars to promote a permanent human presence beyond Earth.

Pierre-Philippe Mathieu

HEAD OF THE PHI-LAB AT THE EUROPEAN SPACE AGENCY

Accelerating the future of Earth Observation

Pierre-Philippe Mathieu heads the Explore Office of the Phi-Lab at the ESA in ESRIN, aiming to connect people, ideas, and digital technologies to help shape the future of Earth Observation. He spent 20+ years working in the field of environmental and ocean modelling, weather risk management, and remote sensing. He has a degree in mechanical engineering and MSc from the University of Liege, a PhD in oceanography from the University of Louvain, and a Management degree from Reading Business School.

Roelof Vos

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AT TU DELFT

Designing the plane of the future, making it more fuel-efficient and more sustainable

Dr. Roelof Vos is Assistant Professor at the Aerospace Engineering Faculty of Delft University of Technology. His research focuses on the development of aircraft analysis methodologies for the conceptual design phase, the design of new aircraft configurations, and the assessment of emerging aviation technologies. He teaches courses on aircraft design, aerodynamic design of transport aircraft, and aerodynamic design of combat aircraft.

Eugenie Rives

GENERAL MANAGER AT X, THE MOONSHOT FACTORY

Eugenie leads several early projects at X, Alphabet’s moonshot factory where uncomfortably ambitious, world-changing ideas are developed and taken out into the world. These early stage moonshot teams are exploring radical new ways to solve some of the world’s biggest problems using breakthrough technology. Prior to her work on baby moonshots Eugenie led a robotics moonshot in logistics. Eugenie is passionate about bringing more diversity to the tech industry and co-leads the “Women@X” group.

Michael Köpke

VICE-PRESIDENT OF SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY AT LANZATECH

Turning carbon waste into ethanol to power cars

Michael Köpke is VP of Synthetic Biology at LanzaTech, a company that has developed and commercialised a proprietary gas fermentation process, revolutionizing the way the world thinks about waste carbon by treating it as an opportunity instead of a liability. Michael pioneered the genetic engineering of gas fermenting microbes, enabling the production of fuels and chemicals from carbon oxides. He holds a PhD in biotechnology, has authored over 100 patents, 40 peer articles and won several awards.

Troels Schönfeldt

CO-FOUNDER & CEO OF SEABORG TECHNOLOGIES

Delivering a scalable, cheaper-than-coal, dispatchable power source by 2025

Troels initiated his career as a particle physicist at CERN (CH), the Niels Bohr Institute (DK), European Spallation Source (SE) and DTU (DK). He is a radical-pragmatist, who unintentionally became an impact entrepreneur and CEO when he co-founded Seaborg in 2014. The company is devoted to developing a fundamentally new type of nuclear reactor–a Molten Salt Reactor–and to deliver a scalable, inherently safe, cheaper-than-coal, dispatchable power source by 2025.


Vishaal Bhuyan

CEO OF AANIKA BIOSCIENCES

Improving the integrity of our food systems with programmable molecules to better track and authenticate what we eat

Vishaal co-founded Aanika Biosciences with Ellen Jorgensen in 2018. He began his career on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) & co-authored and edited 3 books on financial derivatives linked to longevity risk, overfishing & water. Vishaal spent over a decade in the investing space, managing a portfolio of esoteric derivatives, as well as serving as a portfolio manager of a $1 billion multi-strategy hedge fund. Vishaal has been featured in a number of publications such as the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, FOX Business, & CNET and has delivered talks at various conferences. In 2017, he used the seeds of a rural Asian plant to create a snack product, available at many locations in NYC. Vishaal graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2005 with a B.A. in the History of Science.

Aaike Van Vugt

COFOUNDER OF VSPARTICLE

Making the manufacturing of nanostructured materials as easy as pushing a button, greatly reducing the development time of new materials and products

Aaike van Vugt has a Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering from the Delft University of Technology. He is the co-founder of VSParticle, aiming to create a material revolution by empowering Material Pioneers with new tools and technology. In the summer of 2015 he participated in the MIT Global Founders Skills Program (currently DeltaV). In 2018, Aaike was selected by Forbes as one of the Europe’s disrupters under 30.

Owen Gaffney

GLOBAL SUSTAINABILITY WRITER & ANALYST AT THE POTSDAM INSTITUTE FOR CLIMATE IMPACT RESEARCH (PIK)

Gaffney’s work focuses on synthesising knowledge on the state of the planet. He is interested in the Anthropocene, Earth system and social tipping points, governance, equality, technology and the world’s changing flow of information. In addition to his position at Stockholm Resilience Centre, Gaffney is analyst and policy advisor at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and, a faculty member at Singularity University, among others.

Nora Khaldi

FOUNDER & CSO AT NURITAS

Datamining our food for better health and longer life

Nora Khaldi is Founder and CSO at Nuritas. DR Khaldi holds a PhD in Molecular Evolution and Bioinformatics as well as a Master’s in Mathematics, Nora is disrupting the status quo of drug discovery by integrating AI and big data to extract peptides from natural sources for the development of therapies to address a broad range of health areas. She was the first scientist to show gene transfer between multicellular species and has been recognised with many innovation and entrepreneurship awards.

Hemai Parthasarathy

CSO & PARTNER AT BREAKOUT VENTURES

Hemai Parthasarathy is CSO and Partner in Breakout Ventures, a new, early stage fund that backs deep tech companies at the intersections of technology, biology, materials, and energy. She is also Scientific Director of Breakout Labs, a philanthropic program to support bold scientist-entrepreneurs as they bring groundbreaking science out of the laboratory and into the market. She was previously North American editor for Nature and a founding editor of PLOS.

Jun Axup

Dr Jun Axup is Scientific Director and Partner at IndieBio, the world’s leading life science accelerator. At IndieBio, she advises companies, runs scientific programming, makes investment decisions, and builds community. Before IndieBio, Jun worked in several startups in immuno-oncology, protein engineering, lab automation robotics, CRISPR, precision medicine, and co-founded two companies. She is passionate about increasing human healthspan/longevity, hacking brains, and solving climate change.

Dov Moran

Leading deep tech innovation in Israel by empowering passionate founders.

Dov is one of Israel’s most prominent hi-tech leaders, entrepreneurs and investors. He is known as a pioneer of several flash memory technologies, most notably as the inventor of the USB flash drive and CEO of M-Systems, that grew to $1B revenue, and was acquired by SanDisk Corp for $1.6B. Dov established few more companies and was the chairman of Tower Semi-conductor when the company performed its turn around. Dov is now the Managing Partner of Grove Ventures, a $110 Million VC fund who specializes in early-stage, deep technology investments.

Kelly Chen

Kelly is a partner at DCVC, a $2B AUM Silicon Valley-based early-stage deep tech VC. She enjoys working on problems arising from fundamental population and labor driven shifts. She is especially excited about teams building revolutionary tech in AI, robotics, manufacturing, sustainability, and future of work. A former quant fixed income trader, Kelly has two engineering degrees from Columbia University and an MBA from Wharton.

Rim Tehraoui

GROUP CHIEF DATA OFFICER AT BNP PARIBAS

Managing the risks of investing in early-stage startups.

​Rim Tehraoui is Group Chief Data Officer at BNP Paribas since July 2019. Before that, she led the Risk Anticipation department, which supports the bank’s development plans by anticipating risks in several dimensions—economic, country, sector, regulatory, and individual clients. She also established the use of AI within Risk and keeps leading the development and deployment of a comprehensive ESG risk management framework along with the deployment of an ESG data supply chain.

Marc Gruber

VICE-PRESIDENT FOR INNOVATION AT EPFL

Building a guidebook for lean startups.

Marc Gruber is VP for Innovation and professor at EPFL. He recently co-authored “Where to Play”, a book depicting a 3-step process for market opportunity identification and selection. Prior to EPFL, Marc worked at LMU, where he was the vice-director of INNOtec and established the LMU’s Center for Entrepreneurship. Marc has published his research in several specialised leading journals and is considered one of the most impactful entrepreneurship scholars.
