Smoke, mirrors, and sovereignty: Is this Europe’s AI moment?

Hi, I’m Jack, the Program Manager at Hello Tomorrow :salut_main:

Call it a six-month-late New Year’s resolution, but I’m kicking off a new series of reflections — straight from the ground working with the best startups, corporations, investors, and others across deep tech. You’ll find them here in our newsletters, and I’d love to hear your take.

Let’s start with a hot and stuffy Dôme de Paris on Day 1 of Viva Tech. Standing before me are Jensen Huang, Arthur Mensch and President Macron, as NVIDIA and Mistral AI unveil their new partnership.

The deal? The Paris-based AI modelling startup is moving into AI infrastructure, powered by NVIDIA’s Grace Blackwell systems. Dreams of Europe’s AI sovereignty fill the room, laptop keyboards are furiously tapped, and it’s smiles all round.

But with Jensen Huang also doing the rounds at tech events in London and Berlin that same week, it does beg the question: Is this really something to get excited about for the French ecosystem? And with NVIDIA powering this big step, is this really European sovereignty? We’re keen to see what’s actually in the contract, and I’m curious to hear your thoughts.

Is this a big step towards European sovereignty, or should we not get carried away just yet?
